MPPCs (Multi-Pixel Photon Counters) are silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) which consist of an array of Geiger mode avalanche photodiode microcells connected in parallel.  The Geiger mode operation of each microcell results in a several hundred thousand, up to several million times gain which makes them suitable for low light measurement either using photon counting or analog measurement.  MPPCs are available in various package forms such as tileable surface mount type which can be arranged in an array to provide large active areas for coupling to scintillators. TE-cooling is also available to reduce dark noise for measuring very low light levels.
